Biodiversa+ is a 7-year European initiative involving over 83 organizations from 41 countries. It supports science-policy cooperation and the development of a pan-European biodiversity monitoring network.To strengthen this effort, Eurac Research, through the Institute of Alpine Environment, is hiring a full-time Biodiversity Monitoring Operational Researcher/Team Officer supporting Biodiversa+ partners involved in WP2 in their work on biodiversity monitoring. The position gives an optimal viewpoint to the fast-developing European biodiversity monitoring landscape and a possibility to collaborate with diverse international networks in the science-policy interface. The ultimate aim of Biodiversa+ WP2 is to establish a harmonized European trans-national network of the national biodiversity monitoring schemes.The hired person will be a full member of the operational team of Biodiversa+ composed of ca. 17 team members based in several organisations across Europe, with a special role as officer for biodiversity monitoring. All the operational team officers are placed under the supervision of a Biodiversa+ manager for matters related to the implementation of the specific activities of the work package. More specifically, in the operational team, the hired person will be mainly under the supervision of the lead biodiversity monitoring officer based at Syke (Finland).The candidate will support the assessment of biodiversity monitoring schemes across Europe (by the ministries of environment/ environmental protection agencies) and synthesis of this information to get a comprehensive overview of the current monitoring initiatives and to identify gaps. In everyday work, the candidate will provide support to the lead biodiversity monitoring officer of Biodiversa+, as well as to WP2 leaders and relevant parties for the implementation of activities related to biodiversity monitoring in Biodiversa+.The position will be based at the Institute for Alpine Environment of Eurac Research located in Bolzano/Bozen (Autonomous Province of Bolzano – Italy). For organizational reasons, the hired person will work under the manager of Biodiversa+ activities at Eurac. This position requires travels abroad, approximately 6 times a year.TasksContribute to the coordination and knowledge exchange among Biodiversa+ WP2 partners by facilitating meetings, encouraging active involvement, and supporting network-wide collaboration on biodiversity monitoring topics.Assist work package and task leaders in the implementation of their work on biodiversity monitoring, including preparing background materials, documenting discussions, planning activities, and supporting links with related European initiatives.Promote Biodiversa+ biodiversity monitoring work, in close collaboration with the Biodiversa+ communication operational team officers by sharing short texts for the update of the website or any other communication tools and by supporting WP7 of Biodiversa+ on the involvement of stakeholders for WP2.Assist in monitoring the financial and administrative progress of WP2, including collecting and organizing data for reporting purposes and contributing to the assessment of EU funding use in biodiversity monitoring schemes.Support and organize activities related to the use of biodiversity monitoring data in private decision making.RequirementsMaster’s degree in biodiversity/natural sciences, ecology, European cooperation or similar studiesProfessional level of English, written and spoken.
