OverviewAmazon’s Intelligent Cloud Hosting (ICON) Team is looking for a System Development Engineer to join our team in San José, Costa Rica. We host Amazon’s websites, including global marketplaces, partner portals, and experiences like Kindle, Alexa, Amazon Video, Mobile Application; Physical Stores, Luna. We help deliver the HTML that delights customers and ensure underlying transactions—payments, tax, contracts, returns, inventory, and notifications—are processed reliably. We perform cloud infrastructure management at a massive scale and focus on operational quality, security, cost reduction, availability, and reliability. Our team is diverse and international, with offices in Seattle, New York, Dublin, San Jose, Sydney and Bangalore. We’re looking for a Systems Development Engineer who is inventive, understands operational excellence, and can help scale our systems.A big part of our job is creating and updating a strategic SRE toolkit built on AWS technology. We use these tools across Amazon to deploy, monitor, and operate hundreds of thousands of services that power our highly distributed architecture. Our tools include orchestration, predictive analytics, monitoring, problem diagnosis and automated repair, enabling configurations that intelligently manage traffic through our distributed architecture for our customers.ResponsibilitiesWe do almost everything in Linux. We’re looking for people who have tuned their preferred distro to work the way they like it.We need people with a solid grasp of networking fundamentals, including experience with load balancers, switches, and routers.We need people who can design, implement, maintain and deploy components that solve problems in a complex ecosystem. We work in several languages (not limited to, but most often Python and Java). It is more important to us that you understand coding in the context of working in distributed systems and/or widely scaled web applications.We need people with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals.We want to work with people whose passion for problem solving aligns with debugging and troubleshooting skills.We need people who can self-motivate and follow through on projects, being detail oriented, passionate, and delivering results.About the teamWe connect Amazon worldwide websites and consumer experiences such as Kindle, Amazon Video, and Alexa to the internet, ensuring the highest level of availability, security, and privacy of web services that power the customer experience worldwide. We abstract, centralize, and optimize infrastructure management from individual service teams and operate 120+ Tier-1 services for teams in Worldwide Consumer. We own the routing layer built on AWS technology that connects traffic with low latency and protects web services against malicious robots and DDoS attacks.Basic Qualifications1+ years of DevOps or SysOps in a large-scale software development environment experience1+ years of systems development experienceKnowledge of Linux fundamentalsKnowledge of at least one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java, or PerlExperience with network fundamentals (including load balancers, switches, routers, etc.)Strong written & verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively to both technical & non-technical individualsBachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related discipline/experiencePreferred QualificationsKnowledge of and proficiency in the Python scripting languageKnowledge of best practices for software deploymentExperience with infrastructure managementExperience with eCommerce retail websitesDetail-oriented, passionate, and able to deliver resultsOur inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers.
