Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Maintenance Specialist will perform maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Preventative Maintenance Foreman (McMurdo / South Pole), Facilities Maintenance Supervisor or Preventative Maintenance Coordinator (Palmer). Tasking is based on employee’s prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements.Position ResponsibilitiesDiagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing buildings, systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure.Manage small maintenance projects within their work area, coordinating trades, equipment, tools, parts, and schedules, with reporting to the PM Foreman and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.Perform major overhauls, including dismantling, replacing parts, and repairing facilities-related equipment such as HVAC, refrigeration, doors, hoists, compressors, pumps, kitchen and lab equipment, and some non-facility assets.Work from Job Plans, schematics, blueprints, manuals, and applicable codes to accomplish tasks.Analyze equipment breakdowns and make technical decisions based on manufacturer recommendations.Respond promptly to emergency service calls during and outside normal hours.Collaborate with other station personnel and trades as needed.Prepare work plans, safety analyses, checklists, and procedural documents.Lead and oversee work by Utility Technicians regularly.Assist in daily operations of the maintenance crew and fill in for the Preventive Maintenance Foreman when necessary.Implement and enforce Preventative Maintenance Program, including inventory and work order management in Maximo.Maintain detailed records, logs, and interpret trends for issue resolution.Submit reports and conduct quality assurance inspections.Document hours, tasks, materials, and processes thoroughly.Advise supervisors on job progress and resource needs.Make sound decisions to solve problems safely and effectively.Deploy to remote facilities for day trips or extended periods as needed.Manage inventory and resupply requests for repair parts.Coordinate with supervisors on maintenance data and task updates.Participate in training and safety programs.Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained safely and efficiently, following SOPs and recommending updates.Perform outdoor tasks in extreme weather conditions.Identify and communicate hazards and safety violations.Comply with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.Participate in safety programs and maintain a clean, safe work environment.Perform additional duties as required.Required Education, Experience, Certificates, and LicensesHigh School diploma or equivalent.Minimum five years of experience in facilities maintenance, including preventive and corrective maintenance in industrial or commercial settings.Experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.Experience with fuel oil-fired combustion appliances (South Pole and Palmer).Expected Skills and CompetenciesAbility to work independently and demonstrate relevant skills.Willingness and ability to perform all duties of the position.Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, manuals, and troubleshoot effectively.
