This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to our facility while developing your skills in a dynamic environment.Job Duties :Trains, coordinates, and supervises working inmate mechanicsAnalyzes the repair work neededSet repair priorities and determine whether or not vendor repairs are neededConduct vehicle inspectionsDetermine all repair parts, supplies, and accessories neededPrepares purchase orders for those needed items for final approval and processingMaintain a complete inventory of all parts, supplies, and toolsEnsures accurate data entry into the department's automated fleet management program, Ron Turley Associates (RTA); This includes, but is not limited to, Work Orders, Fuel Logs, Inventory records, and PM schedulingKeep current with latest technology to update skills through training seminars, classes, and printed materialsDrives on State businessPerforms other duties appropriate to the assignmentKnowledge of :Power / drive train system inspections and diagnosesRepair procedures of electrical systems, inspections, and diagnosesElectronic control systems inspections, diagnosis, repair procedures, and computerized diagnostic analyzer uses and practicesHydraulic system inspectionsDiagnosis, repair procedures, and operating principles of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion enginesPrinciples and practices of scheduled preventive maintenance programsAutomotive / truck and heavy equipment operating proceduresSkill in :Using computerized diagnostic analyzer equipment to troubleshoot and repair electric, electronic, and mechanical systemsUsing a wide variety of specialized tools and equipment to service, repair, and maintain the automotive, truck, and heavy construction equipmentPreparing accurate repair estimates and establishing the best and most effective course of repair actionUsing repair service and overhaul manuals, printed or computerizedUsing computerized maintenance management and information systemsPersonal computers and software applicationsPerforming quality control inspectionsEstimating time and material costs of repairs on equipmentAbility to :Lifting / Carrying 50lbsPushing / Pulling 50lbsWalking / Running 0.5 milesDiagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and electronic hydraulic system problemsPerform safety and preventive maintenance inspections on a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipmentOverhaul, repair, and service a wide variety of automotive and heavy construction equipmentFollow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructionsPrioritize, schedule, and track repairs and services for a large fleet operationComprehend and apply rules, regulations, policies, and proceduresWork in a prison environmentSelective Preference(s) :Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in at least two categoriesMobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS)-Air Conditioning CertificationMinimum of Five (5)years of continuous working experience at a Journeyman level as an automotive or heavy equipment mechanicPre-Employment Requirements :Due to the need to repair heavy trucks and buses, this position would require possession of a valid driver’s license and a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a “P” endorsement within the first six months from the date of hire.Within the first year from hire date, this position requires obtaining both a Department of Transportation (DOT) Brake Inspector Certification and a DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification.Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, drug test, and a medical / physical examination.If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.
