OverviewJoin to apply for the Communication System Engineer role at Thales.Thales Alenia Space is a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%). Our diverse skills and talents help our customers (governments, institutions, space agencies, telecommunications operators) Space to Connect, Secure & Defend, Observe & Protect, Explore, Travel & Navigate.Location: RomeResponsibilitiesContribute to the activity within the frame of programmes and studies undertaken by the “uW Payloads, Data Handling and Communication Engineering” Unit as Communication System Engineer.Support the definition of uW Instruments and communication subsystem functional and performance requirements through analysis and assessment (e.g., Radiometers, P/L data Handling and Transmission systems, Communication systems, radar related systems).Definition, implementation and maintenance of models and software tools for simulating the P/L or S/S functionalities and main performances.Definition, implementation and maintenance of RF budgets.Definition of related command and control interface.Definition, implementation and maintenance of related Link Budgets as applicable.Contribution to definition of Payloads or S/S architecture.Definition, implementation and maintenance of related I/F and budgets (Data Handling, Electrical, RF).Support to relevant equipment and sub-assembly, internal and external supplier technical monitoring and relevant review attendance.In the frame of the verification and validation phases of the programme, assessing/evaluating P/L or S/S functionalities and performance on the basis of test results.Support as System and Verification engineer for the relevant AIT campaign as applicable.Participation in meetings/reviews with both internal and external customers.Preparation of documents and presentations.Contribution to programme reports and minutes of meetings.Part of the activity is conducted under Italian Defense National Authority Rules. The candidate shall be eligible for the relevant security authorization/clearance.Required BackgroundMaster’s degree in Electronic/Telecommunication Engineering.Background in the field of communication systems, with focus on space applications.Knowledge of digital and RF electronics for data handling, processing and wide-band communication, TT&C.Knowledge of the main on-board data interface.BUS: MIL 1553 B, CANSpaceWire, High Speed Serial Link (WizardLink)Knowledge of radio communication and related protocols.Information theory.Advanced coding and modulation (e.g., Turbo coding, SCCC and DVBS2).Modelling/simulation of HPA non-linearity and relevant compensation algorithm in DSP domain for high-order modulation schemes.Modelling/simulation of frequency response impairment (Flatness, Group delay variation) and relevant equalization technique/algorithm.Modelling of atmosphere propagation effects (loss, de-polarization and cross-polarization effects).CCSDS protocols for space data link.Data compression techniques/algorithms.Knowledge of Matlab.Programming language knowledge (e.g., C, Visual Basic).MS Office products.Knowledge of the English language for both written and verbal communication.Teamwork attitude.Part of the activity is conducted under Italian Defense National Authority Rules.
