Job Description Summary
Cardiothoracic APP: The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work with physicians and team management to assist in direct patient care, case management, practice development, and implementation of policies and procedures focused on patient‑centered care models and to increase the continuity of care of all cardiothoracic patients. Experience with vein harvesting is required.
Hours and Compensation
Hours per week: 40.
Scheduled work hours/shift: Must be able to work inpatient and outpatient, including nights and weekends.
Pay basis/FLSA: Salaried/Exempt.
Required Minimum Training and Education
Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (AGACNP/ACNP) with RNFA certification for first or second assistance in the operating room.
Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
Licensed in South Carolina as a Physician Assistant or as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse ACNP.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; if not current, must enroll and receive a certificate by start date.
DEA and DHEC license applications submitted prior to first day.
Minimum Qualifications
PA or ACNP with RNFA who graduated with a surgical fellowship.
Preferred Qualifications
PA or ACNP with RNFA who graduated from a surgical fellowship and has two years’ surgical experience.
Job Duties
Provides direct care of cardiothoracic patients inpatient and outpatient.
Primary inpatient responsibilities include care of postoperative cardiac and thoracic patients on the hospital wards.
Interact directly with attending physicians, residents, and medical/APP students.
Assist in evaluation of patients in the cardiac surgery clinic for operative candidacy and selection.
Provide comprehensive history and perform physical examinations.
Evaluate and treat based on history, physical exam, radiologic and lab results pursuant to the practice agreement.
Perform therapeutic procedures and interpersonal reflex:
vein harvesting
chest tube placement
central line placement
arterial line placement
Initiate referrals and consult with physicians.
First assist in the operating room.
Document and bill for direct care provided.
Utilize current research and evidence‑based decision‑making.
Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
Participate in accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
Maintain professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
Precept students and facilitate learning of new team members.
Maintain required licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as applicable.
Physical Requirements
Continuous requirements to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to bend at waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach, use both hands and legs with good dexterity. Perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders. Reach in all directions. Qualify for respirator use. Vision: 20/40 corrected. Work in latex‑safe environment indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, carry objects weighing 50 lbs unassisted. Lift from 36″ to overhead 25 lbs. Work in dusty areas and confined spaces.
